Blog #13 Story I haven't told yet

As some of you may know, I've been working at Krispy Kreme since I was a sophomore in high school. Well this is the story of my first day on the job: The Day I Ate a Dozen Hot Glazed in Under 5 Minutes. It started with a good friend of mine on the tennis team named Christian, he put in a good word with the boss and got me a job with him at the Kreme. After about 4 hours into my shift the crowds died down when Christian came up to me and told me about the Dozen Donut Challenge. It was a race that he claimed all new workers had to do, that consisted of eating 12 fresh glazed donuts in 5 minutes. I was weary but couldn't back down to a challenge, so I loosened my belt and grabbed my glazed. The timer started and I felt like Kobiashi, I was smashing three together and shoving them in my mouth as fast as I possibly could. Challenging as it was, I was finally at the home stretch, three to go. With a minute still to spare I scarfed down the final glob of glaze and slapped the timer. I had done what only one other worker before me could do, and it was magical. The 22 hundred calories of dough that was piled up in my stomach felt like victory. Sweet, sweet victory.

Linked In blog #12

Coming off professional would be the most import aspect of creating a LinkedIn profile. I would want to come off as a mature and responsible person, who is capable of doing whatever job I was interviewing for. Also, it is important to appear educated and informed. Especially I would like to be educated on the job at hand. Finally, I would want to come across as someone who can lead and is also goal-oriented.

Blog #9 prompt: Sources

I found a decent amount of useful sources on GMO's. It seemed however that a majority of them were very similar, all talking about GMO's as a general idea. It was tougher to find sources that were specific to my topic but once I used the Pickler Library databases I found more. I was searching for things on GMO's and also ending food scarcity in places and found a couple useful articles. Most of my sources I found were web articles but I also found a good research paper about the topic.

Annotated Bib:

Phillips, Theresa. "Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs): Transgenic Crops and Recombinant DNA Technology." Nature.com. Nature Publishing Group. Web. 22 Feb. 2016.

This article has lots of useful general info about genetically modified organisms. It introduces what they are and gives non-biased information about their uses. In addition to this it also gives reasons for why they are harmful and also on why they are useful. I feel this can be a useful source to cite for general info about GMO’s and it also has plenty of citations to check out for further info.

Fridovich-Keil, Judith. "Genetically Modified Organism (GMO)." Encyclopedia Britannica Online. Encyclopedia Britannica. Web. 22 Feb. 2016.

This article begins by giving a general overview of what GMO’s are and their uses. It then goes into talking about GMO’s specifically in agriculture. It talks specifics in GM crops and how fast and how much is being produced with GMO’s. This article is useful because I could use it when Im making an argument about the use of GMO’s in agriculture.

Ralston, Robin. The Impact on Human Health of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in Foods. Web. 22 Feb. 2016.

This article has a few different sections on GMO’s. The idea is though that we don’t yet have enough info to label GMO’s as “goo” or “bad”, we need more research. However the article does cite possible problems along with possible benefits of GMO’s. This article has useful info for attempting to classify GMO’s that I can use in my paper.

Zero Draft

So my general topic for this research paper is genetically modified organisms. At first I thought I could just talk about them and hwat they are and what they do for my paper but I decided that I need a more specific topic to focus my work. I was considering going inot GMO's from a scientific point of view and looking at the chemistry behind them, like how they are created and how they differ from organic regular organisms. But then I was having trouble ressearching this so I decided to change my topic to be about the possibility of GMO's being used to solve the hunger problem in places where people are left without food. This could be interesting because I already found a few good sources and it is looking promising. My paper could be formatted like first intro duce gmo's then say how they are used in making more food and then how they can be used to feed more people and controversy over their use. this willbbe a good paper i like the topic. end of zero draft...

GMO Rant

Bruhhhhh dont even get me STARTED on GMO's. Its like I cant even walk through the goddamn frozen food section at Aldi's without having to fight a bitch complaining about "genetically modified organisms"!! Im just like "there are 7 billion hungry mouths on this planet, how tf do you plan on feeding these chops without using GMO's to mass produce food" LIKE C'MON!! ooooo and dont even get me started on people who say its "unhealthy" and that GMO's are "dropping bodies like a tsunami." Nearly every thing we eat has some sort of GMO in it and you dont see me keeled over?? Studies show that GMO's can often times be more nutritional than a non-GMO counterpart! and people still wanna complain....

Survey Interpretation

I thought that the survey revealed a lot about the class and our eating habits/interests. One trend was that a majority of the class was most excited about Chick-Fil-A coming to the SUB. This attests to Chick-Fil-A's general popularity since there aren't many good chicken places in Kirksville. It was interesting to note that about 50% said that their ethnicity influences what they eat and half said it does not. Since a majority of the class is the same ethnicity (I think) I guess this question shows that some people simply embrace there heritage more than others.

Research Ideas

One idea that I could base my research project on is GMO's. I do not have a very strong opinion on them and I also do not entirely know what they are. I feel that researching them would be interesting and give me a better understanding of what they do and why people are arguing over them. Another topic I am looking at is the debate about organic foods. I could talk about the pros and cons of moving towards a more organic market and the effects this would have on our nation.

Differences in text

I think one main difference in the text is where each of the readings are coming from. The first was strongly in support of organic food, rather that its not doing enough. The second was impartial and was simply a study on them. But the third was about the problem of organics and how it limits food in countries that are food insecure like africa. This difference means that each one will be biased in its own way, besides the survey which was right in between them. Another difference is their approach. The farmer in the first was trying to call for a change in policy, while the survey was simply trying to inform. However the last one used slander of the organic industry to get its point across. I feel the way in which these were written plays a key roll in how we are meant to interpret them.

Food Documentary Impression

My initial thoughts after watching Food Inc.was that it had a powerful message. It was telling its audience(the general public) of a major problem in America that isn't getting solved. It was timely because it came out in 2008 right after a few food recalls in 2007 and 2006. When the media was started to get into the bad habits of the large food corporations, this documentary emerged shedding even more light. It uses a lot of logos and pathos in its argument. Much of how it is structured is with emotional appeal to people that is triggered by some sort of fact about the food we eat. I feel it was successful in its goal to educate america on its the real cost and production of the food it eats.

Mentor Blog

After trying to decide what kind of blog I would be interested in following I finally found one that I think fits my interest perfectly. It's called "Fat Guy Food Blog" and its a guy who goes around the US and critiques fast food chains and their food. His style is funny and lighthearted, and what interested me is how he incorporates humor into his posts. It was also interesting to note that he seemed to take the blog seriously even though he is only writing about fast food. I think his goal is to give his readers a smile and also force them to get up and run to a nearby McDonalds for a burger.

Live to Eat

I wouldn't call myself a food critic by any means, nor am I qualified. This doesn't mean I can't have a deep passionate love for the food that I eat. While some people think eating is just something they do to sustain life, I like to look at eating as an opportunity. Eating should be enjoyed because it can have such an impact on your day. Recently I was just hanging around when I had a craving for some food. Yes I could have gone upstairs and ate leftovers, but instead I decided to go out and get something. I figured that if I was going to eat anything it was gong to have to be delicious. So naturally I drove straight to Dairy Queen and got a large chocolate cookie dough blizzard and finished it before I could even get back home. I love to eat and I live to eat.

Food and Me

It's Christmas morning at the MacAinsh house and while my brothers rush downstairs to open presents I have something else in mind. No, I'm not praying that Santa brought me everything on my list, nor am I waiting to see what everyone else got. The only thing on my mind is sitting in the oven, slowly baking at 425 degrees. All I can think about is two fat scoops of steaming breakfast casserole. As the final layer of cheese simmers atop the underlying eggs and bacon, a tantalizing smell fills the air and I can practically taste it. You see, for me food is something to be enjoyed. I can't even begin to describe how hard it is when I go on break from work and must decide what fast food joint to go to. I love many kinds of food and am always open to try new things. In addition to this I feel that food is also a good way to bring people together. Every Thanksgiving I look forward to seeing all my family's smiling faces at the dinner table just as much I want to see the steam float up from a hot sweet potato. Food connects people because no matter where you come from, you still have to eat. Its what we all have in common, whether you are from the southern tip of Africa or the coldest part of Canada. This is what food is to me, a way to get to know people while enjoying something we all love.
